Hello, guys

I have a question. Since I'm wargaming often I see some people writing what historical epoque they're playing, but often I simply do not understand what they're talking about, because I'm german, and I don't know the abreviations like ACW, or WOI...and so on. WWI and WWII are not that hard to gues, but the little more exotic epoques are tricky. Could someone of you just list a timescale, and scenario for me (us, I've seen there several Germans here (hallo Landsleute^^*winkwink*)).

Thank you.

Hallo Lukas,

ACW = American Civil War (Amerikanscher Bürgerkrieg)

WOI = War of Independence (Unabhängigkeitskrieg)

AWI = American War of Independence (Amerikanscher Unabhängikeitskrieg)

SYW = Seven Years War (Siebenjähriger Krieg) [strangely enough there does not seem to be one for the 30 year war)

GW I / GW II = Gulf War I / Gulf War II (1ter und zweiter Golfkrieg)

WW I / WW II = World War I / WorldWar II (1ter und 2ter Weltkrieg [WK] just like you must have guessed)

Those are the ones that come to my mind right now. All the others seem be used unabbreviated.

Alles Gute,

Burkhard

P.S.: Castrop-Rauxel is only about 60 - 70 klicks (= KM) from where you live! ;)

Dankeschön sehr hilfreich...

But, what is the difference between WOI and AWI?

The 30 Year's War is not that interesting for Wargamers, because the tactics in this time were very similar for all parties, takeing part...the one with more soldiers won...

Maybe you've heared the word "Heerhaufen" anywhere, thats exactly what it was. As many men with guns in the middle, surroundet by pikeniers, to protect them of the cavalerie...and on'em...

Later in the War, cavalerie was completely taken ot of the Armies, because too expensive, and with no significant effect in the battle.

Crazy times.

As far as I know WOI referes to any war of independence and is usually used together with a country or time that makes it clear (I have actually only heard it once before). AWI is specific for that one war.

Beleave it or not... I actually once saw a 30YW game somewhere... the host said that he simply wanted to wargame sme medival skirmish and he felt that the Heerhaufen were a good chance for that. So anything goes.

Cheers,

Burkhard

Never heared about that...

When did it happen, and who against whom? Some kind of "inheritance disagreements" between the royals? What happened there? (Whow, I thougt I'm quite firm in History...dough!)

Just google 'Oliver Cromwell' Wink. There once was a time in merry old England where monarchy (King Charles V) wasn't all too popular...

Ever seen 'Cromwell' starring Richard Harris and Alec Guinness?

70s, but still great.

Cheers

That'd be Charles I, we still haven't had a Charles III yet! though he could be next up.

Uuups. How silly. To my excuse I have to mention that I am over fourty and start to suffer from dementia.

I stand corrected and will stick to Roman history from now.

Otherwise I'll might loose my head just like good old Charles (the first, of course).

Wink

@Lukas: Time-wise we are talking 17th century, shot and pike. Just right for Black Powder!

Cheers
