Indeed. A sharp, pointy object aimed in one's own direction, and where backed up by a clear intent to use it, tends to cause a healthy amount of aversion in any right-thinking person - that's why they're still in use!

Ah but that is the point of military training, to turn you from the normal thinking into a soldier, rather than just an armed civilian.

I imagine that was also the point of the Zulu regimental system, to incentivise aggression and penalise cowardice. Apparently warriors who had done well in battle were praised and rewarded. Those who displayed cowardice were executed.

Just something regarding more modern weapons.

Blitzkrieg Commander is a game I play, which is a variant of Black Powder for WW2 (but predates Black Powder). It is quite different, to reflect how more modern weapons work and tactics work. For example, shooting and movement are all blended in together (not moving THEN shooting), so you can do a lot of 'suppressing the enemy and THEN charging' etc. And suppressing the enemy - basically the same as disordering in Black Powder - is much easier in BLitzkrieg Commander.

So it's all about cover, suppression etc. But it still uses the same two basic stats of "range" and "attack dice" that you see in Black Powder, albeit different ones depending on whether the target is armoured or soft. And because firepower is so strong (lots of attack dice) it's usually crazy to charge an enemy without suppressing them first.

Yes the advent of smokeless powder and automatic weapons changed things greatly.

In the era of Black Powder you were expected to stride manfully into the enemy fire, showing no fear.

Actually BKC is a derivative of Warmaster. I have a playtester credit in that book :)

Me and Bob Barnetson used to game France 1940 and Early-Mid Afrika with the BKC rules.

Yeah! I play Warmaster and Warmaster Ancients. Haven't tried the current or sci fi variants though.

Warmaster is hilarious. Ultra-rapid multiple rounds of combat compressed into a single turn etc. Bowfire doing little. Fair play to the games designers for playing around a lot with the fundamentals to reflect each era.
