SAGA Vikings ... again

Postby Cubster » Tue Nov 13, 2012 2:23 pm

SAGA Vikings are coming thick and fast these days, so here are some more reinforcements for my own force, bringing the mighty horde up to seven models so far.

All Gripping Beast again, with LBM Studios shield transfers. Some of the Gripping Beast models have open 'mitt' hands to make it easier to get the various weapons in place, so I've started modelling thumbs on them in Greenstuff; it's not the most challenging sculpting project you can undertake and I'm so much happier with the look of them with thumbs.

The spears are GB wire spears and the javelins are just quilter's pins.

Enjoy!

Cracking stuff @Cubster! I really like that shield on the last one- the weathering and battle damage are really well done. This is not helping me avoiding buying more miniatures I really do not have time to paint!!

You keep amazing me with how much character you manage to put on a 28mm model's face. Excellent work, as always.
What colours did you use for the red hair on the second guy? I only got a brown/orange mix right once (and forgot how..), other times it's often too orange or too bland...

Great work Cubster.

Any chance you can reveal the secrets of your good looking blond hair.... and not just Head & Shoulders....

Super thumbs Cubster :thumbsup

And great painting two. My favorite is contestant number two, I love the subtle weathering and grime on his tunic. :thumbsup :thumbsup :thumbsup

Thanks guys.

For those asking about my fabulous hairstyling secrets, it's not that complex really, but annoyingly inexact. The red is a red leather shade with orange mixed in - about a 50/50 mix - highlighted up to a pale sand colour. The blonde is a sort of buff leather colour highlighted up to an off-white milk sort of shade.

For hair I try to make sure there are some darker shades showing, then a line of highlight catching the hair in the lightest shade. If you try to simply highlight all over the same it can look like straw. Have a look at the last photo for an idea of what I'm banging on about.

Wot? You did Mitt's barnet - er ... good work? ;)
These are great; I think No. 2 does it for me, too, though it's the facial expression/weathering
and shading (and the shield pattern/wear) that stand out, I think. Spot on! :thumbsup
