Change of pace - The Good Sir James

Postby Parus Ater » Wed Feb 29, 2012 3:18 pm

I've been going through the backlog of half started projects and found some Rebellion stuff. Started off with the Black Douglas...

I'm useless at free hand so the observant will notice I've tried and failed to do the stars so I'm planning on using decals, likely Doms 15mm US ones. Some may also I've got no less than four different basing materials on there for that mudflat/boggy ground down Bannockburn way.

Dang, just saw I forgot o paint the metal along the back of the shield! Ho-hum.

Another weird thing, this was primed with luminous green paint. Yes, really.

For stars, try using kiddies' stickers from a stationery shop or such. You can usually get different sized ones.

You can either,

- use the sticker as a 'mask' - ie. stick it over a base colour of what you want your finished star to be, then paint the background over it and remove the sticker,

or,

- use the bit of sticky backing left when you remove your star sticker as a template straight on the shield,

or,

- superglue the sticker straight on and paint it (this means it will stick out a bit of course).

Like the Black Douglas theme too, one of my fave British hero types.

That's really nice Parus, looks kinda like my Skyrim character!

@Cubster that's a brilliant idea, I love the simple solution to things.

Cheers, fellas!

Thanks for the tips, Cubster, I'll pop down the co-op tomorrow and have a look to see what they have.

It's one of Ebob's Rebellion models which I got second hand on ebay. I've had to paint the shield attached to the model since though it was still unpainted the glue just wouldn't budge. I had it in paint stripper, the freezer, boiling water, I tried everything.

I do like Rob's style, you can tell he uses skeleton armatures under his models, they all have a very realistic posture. I'm quite a fan of his work, there's just not enough of it on his own site.

That's hilarious!

Nice looking mini, the green doesn't show at all.

Cheers, Grant. I'm quite happy with it, I know I'm not a terribly brilliant or skillful painter and there's not a great deal of paint on this. I'm currently actually trying to hop around as many types of projects as I can since I feel my painting hasn't improved any in the last five yeats or so. I've kind of been on autopilot, knowing what I will do without trying anything new or challenging. This model is an exercise in speed vs clean and detail.
Obviously I would rightly be ashamed if I found myself entering it in a painting competition but for what it is I'm quite happy.

I like it. It's simple and effective. This guy is a no non-sense killer who's armor is there to keep him alive while he whacks on people with sharp pointy things.
