Hithero's Roman Forces

Postby hithero » Wed Nov 26, 2008 5:43 pm

I started with the Legionaries basic blocking and dip only, I actually had a hard time getting up enthusiasm to paint them.

Legionaries

The archers were the next step.

Archers

And their Centurion:

Archer Centurion

Auxiliaries were next:

Auxilia

Centurion

I was not entirely satisfied with the light chainmail, so blackwashed it first on the cavalry and scorpion crewman:

Scorpion

Cavalry

Decurion

Legates

I don't pretend that they are expertly painted but they look good on the tabletop, and if anybody is interested I have ended up with two 700pt LOTR armies, just need another 8 slingers.

First pics with a new camera and they are a high gloss as the last coat was the dip, I'm surprised there is not more glare, normally I'd take pics before varnishing.

Nice work Dave!

My preference is for a more matt finish. After the dip I use the Army Painter matt varnish (sparingly).

Yes, they look shiny on the pictures.

I'd be interested by pictures and a few words about your scenery that we see in the background. Thanks in advance ;)

Myself and all my gaming mates have had horror stories with matte varnish from various manufacturers so I don't really want to go there again and end up with a white mist over them.

I have been using Dupli Color matt varnish (available from DIY stores) for years without any problem. Over the winter it might take up to a month to get completely matt (in the summer it takes mere hours if placed in the sun), but it is dead cheap, ultra though and I have never had problems with white dots.

But even if you do not wish to go down spray on lane... Have you thought about brush on versions. The big model companies (Revell, Italeri, Tamiya) have real good ones, too.

Cheers,

Burkhard

I had that happen to my first few legionaries hence the 'sparingly' comment. GW used to do one which was fairly idiot proof (which is why I used to buy it) but they changed supplier and got the dreaded white mist and had to do a recall. Afterwards they just supply the semi-gloss stuff which i don't like.

I really like the colour schemes there Hithero, especially the Eastern Archers. I really like their commanding officer too - great conversion and paint job.
