Well the bases are just quickly-made too : sand glued to them, not even painted (usually I'd make at least a wash then a dry-brush), just "dipped" with the mini, then, after the varnish spray, I apply a few patches of PVA and stuff static grass on them (whick looks glossy here because of the flash).
I don't know how it looked back in those days around Hadrian's wall. When I visited a fort there a few years ago, the grass did look like a putting green, thanks to the sheep. Well except that on a putting green you don't see those brown pebbles
