Bases for FOG and WAB

Postby garth99 » Tue Oct 07, 2008 11:03 am

I have been collecting the Romans and Celts from Warlord to build up a couple of armies that could face each other across the table. However I am not sure what rules to use. i have had a quick read through both the FOG and WAB books andI am wondering if there is any way to base the figures where both sets of rules could be used.

I understand that for FOG a 6cm base is 4 figures, which in the case of the Romans means side to side, and i guess looking at the book that some need basing individually so as to remove casualties.

I have based my figures on 25mm bases but having now built the Testudo the battle group looks too spaced out (i dont mean they are on drugs, just too far apart from each other).

I am wondering therefore if anyone uses both systems and how they base their figures.

PS anyone in Northamptonshire up for a game sometime

Bases for FOG and WAB

Yes, you could put 3 figures on a FoG 60mm frontage base. In fact if you wanted to save money, just put one figure on a FoG base, its only purpose is to show the type of troops the base represents (and to look nice). The number of figures on the FoG base makes no difference to how the game is played, as its the base that fights, not the figures, like in WAB.

So thats the main difference. FoG is a base based rules system in which a base is either OK or its dead. The base only varies its number of attacks depending on cohesion or its opponents. Bases used like this are sometimes refered to as 'elements. They are also common to the DBM rules.

I have been a long time player of WAB. I tried FoG but have only had 3 and a half games so far. The half a game was because my opponent, decided he didn't like FoG and gave his rules and army supplements away. On the plus side FoG is undoubtably a better historical simulation than WAB but unfortunalty is not much fun.

Now that makes sense. I did cut up some card last night and found that on the 60mm bases the figures were really cramped together.

I am thinking based on your post to use a number of bases to equal the number of the testudo model i.e 36.

thanks

I heard that the Lord of the Rings rules work well. i dont really have any idea how they would transfer over but i guess Men of Gondor could be replaced with Romans? Orcs for Celts? Uruk Hai for Celts?

theres a link on this site somewhere to a yahoogroup which is working on rules for romans in LOTR. romans are pretty much equivilent to gondor and celts to orcs. theres more stuff and more flavour in the document

EDIT: as promised

I'll vouch for that. Don't expect to play major battles but for skirmishes they work very well. Follow Garfinkle's link for a well tested set of stats and rules courtesy of Hithero.
