My first ten Celtic Warriors

I've painted my first ten and I think they've come put OK. They need some varnish and testors dullcoat yet, but here are the results so far.

These are the “green” ten, I'm looking to have a good mix of colours and plaids, but am painting one primary colour per batch.

The photo's are not that good, this is just a collection of “snaps” on my work bench.

The first batch have been laquered and then dullcoated and a second batch just need the bases finishing and then laquering and then dullcoating.

I'm not finding them a chore to paint at the moment.

Indeed they are lovely. And I'd also like to know how you (or anybody else - yes, Phil, I'm looking at you) went about painting the plaid. It looks awesome and I find it kind of a scary thing to try.

No secrets really - just pick a base colour, either light or dark, and then paint a variety of stripes on it with a fine brush in a contrasting colour - or colours - best to paint light stripes onto dark base, or dark stripes onto light base, or they don't show up very well. Follow it up with Quick Shade to form the shadows and mute the colours, and that's it.

Thanks, the secret; a fine brush (size 0 or 2/0) and thinned down paint.

The two most obvious examples above are the two chaps in the front rank:

Front rank guy second in from left is just a grid of two close white lines, really easy with watered down paint.

Front rank guy third in from left is just a grid of yellow with a grid of black overlaid on it is again, really easy with watered down paints.

Those designs are probably most obvious in this shot:

The trousers of the guy on the far left are done similar to the blue/white tunic chap, a grid of two close lines, this time blue on white.

Also, don't try to over-do it, out of those 25 figures, there are six plaid tunics, four pairs of plaid trousers and four pairs of stripey trousers, so only just over half.

Judging by the Celts I have seen so far on these pages, and comments made about shields, I have come to the conclusion that less is better than more. With the way that the units rank up, there are just enough plaid clad and shield wielding minis to make the whole unit look as if they all have shields and plaid without the effect being spoiled by too much clutter.

Once again, nicely done chaps - some very nice looking units out there.
