Thanks for the links - got a lot of viewing to do this weekend! That and completely restructuring my studio room to find a more permanent area for airbrushing...

I've already bought a bottle of airbrush cleaner and a cleaner pot/airbrush stand. I have some Tamiya thinners I've had for years but never used so will be starting out with Tamiya paints while I learn.

For using oil paint as filters does anyone have recommendations for brand?
Cheers,

Paul Sawyer

I use Windsor and Newton, but only the good Series 1 stuff.

VanDyke Brown has to be the most useful tube by far (perfect for pin-washing).

Hi Paul,

I use hardware store lacquer thinner to clean my airbrush. They are cheap and just as the same as any expensive hobby thinner. I clean my AB after every use, every color change.

For oil filter, I thin Winsor Newton with Turpenoid. It's oderless, safe, and clean.

I'm an advocate of using cheap hobby substitutes. I own my Iwatas and Paasches for more than 20 years now. They still serve me very well.

I hope this helps,

Just back from town. Picked up a set of magnetic tool holders so I can get all mine off the desk and onto the wall. Also snaffled a set of latex gloves and some PTFE tape to further seal the hose joints.

Going to eschew the spray booth for a bit and use an old cardboard box until the room is reorganised and I know how much space I'll have for a booth. Will likely build my own.

Now to glue together a few scrap vehicles so I can test the airbrush out tomorrow.
Cheers,

Was gonna mention gloves as a hint, did you just get one pair as you might find they don't last too long, I get mine from work (100 for about £7), if you can find a box of 'em from some where they'll last ages as I only use one at a time (the hand holding the airbrush doesn't usually get much paint on), also you might want to get a good mask as it can get at the back of the throat and become irritating (why doesn't it look like that word is spelt right?! :? )

Hi Paul,

Here's a space and money saving booth. I built one years ago for my friend and only take some power drill and carpet knife to do.

Large plastic container, bathroom fan, tin foil duct, and air condition filter. All for less than 50 USD. You can get the same result as the Tamiya version, which runs about 150 USD.

I used to have one made with 200mm PC fans powered with a cheapy computer PSU, the exit tube from the old tumble dryer build on a frame of foamboard. It was a prototype that ended up being used.

EDIT - I did have the silver tube connected to an airvent the landlord had for the gas fire since it was the perfect size.

Mask will be next along with the spray booth. I'm sure there is a lot more I'll need too!
