Strange happenings in Silloth

Postby clivethecelt » Tue Aug 07, 2012 11:02 am

Maybe there is an upside to having a cracked rib. Can't go mountain biking, so went for road ride up the Solway coast via Maryport and Silloth. The latter is very much a place that time has not been kind too - full of formerly grand Victorian hotels falling into disrepair. But wait! What's that on the front? A newly opened museum - a private collection of 12,000 model soldiers! Gobsmacked. The owner spent a lot of time in Koln, so many are German minis (might even give IO a run for his money), but there's a massive range of periods and scales. See: http://www.soldiersinsilloth.co.uk/

I would hear about this now when I'm in completly the wrong part of the country.

That said, Silloth sounds a bit too close to Shoggoth and abandoned Victorian hotels just screams Innsmouth. How are the locals? A bit gilly?

Is it only me thinking that the she on the shield has her hand on his pocket to prevent him from spending some money on miniatures? Or searching for that money for other use?

His wife? A geriatric nurse?

12.000 miniatures, nice start. I know some German 1/1250 shipcollectors with 15.000 ships . And miniature collectors with 15.000 - 30.000 soldiers. No museums, private collections.

Don't ask me how many I have, I never counted. :shame But miniatures of all scales and ships ... A five digit number.

Or an expert in that ancient art of necro-ventriloquism.

@ IO: Wow! Pity they aren't on display! This museum's a little - er - English - a return is a must when I've more time to spend there. Might haul Carvel up there on a bike trip if he's a mind. As for the sign - best ask Mr C.
@ Mikeland: Don't think the boss was too impressed. She doesn't think I need any encouragement!
@ Cubster: Funny, there weren't many elderly folk about ... guess they all get fed to the ...

The fish and chip shop looks very good though. Thankfully, it's not called H.Briss & Sons. ;)
Silloth seemed a nice little place that needs a boost; I hope the museum keeps going.

12.000 is a lot if they are all 28 mm or larger.

But like many I have 15 mm and 1/300 too. And a bag of 50 foot was standard with H&R miniatures. 20 Bags and you have a 1000 miniatures. Cheating ? :laughter

Well, there are some thousands of 28 mm and larger. Rose war armies alone 1200 + . So I'm still able to serve as bad example or excuse.

"I want some..." Boss: "You have allready so many miniatures" "But IO has..... " And I will never jump from a bridge. :bliss
