Don't feel you have to apologise @clivethecelt, you gave us a heads up on what could have been a very interesting program and I thank you for that :) You only need to apologise if you commissioned the programme!!

It is a shame as there has been some really good historical stuff on BBC4 lately.

No need to appologise Clive, it could have been good. Westwaller is right, it is the commissioning editor needs to grovel!

<START RANT> It is a real pity, the ECW is so neglected in terms of documentaries, and sadly when it is it is rarely understood or represented... Whilst we may have a great laugh ribbing each other on here about Round heads and woyalists (I can't help it if all Royalists are pink fairies! ;) ) it is a shame that this kind of nonsense actually gets into the planning schedule and re-enforces the dreadful stereotypes.

There were many a dour god fearing puritan who out of conscience followed the king and likewise the Parliamentarians had a good few colorful characters in their ranks (at least until they got found out and made to wear brown and sing psalms  )

As the 370th anniversary of the war is this year it would have been ideal to have had a decent documentary from the beeb. But instead they waste resources promoting z list nobodies giving us their irrelevant thoughts waffling on about a cultural devide that didn't really exist in 1640 never mind now, and have the show hosted by a genuine historian not an interior designer! <END RANT>

Time for a chocolate digestive.

Didn't watch it yesterday but I guess I won't bother now and will delete the recording... :?
Oh well, I still got last episode of Game of Thrones to watch, that'll do.

Cheers

ECW has never been one period I've been really interested in, probably through ignorance rather than anything else. As I know so little about it, and being wholly disappointed by this programme, I was spurred on to do a little digging about local Civil War events, and came across this site:
http://wilkinp4.blackapplehost.com/Hist ... vilWar.htm
Probably not of much interest to anyone outside Lancashire (specifically, NE Lancs), but I found it fascinating how many local families - often inter-related - were so divided between the two factions, even to the extent (as mikeland was saying) that some Protestants were Royalist and v.v.
