Great topic and very interesting to hear people's stories!!

Wargaming started for me when a fiend brought over some 40k Imperial Guard and the 3rd edition Guard and Catachan codices. What drew me in was the terrain building opportunities, and how there were rules to fight battles over said terrain (I was always crafty at school). I immediately thought Imperial Guard were amazing but ended up collecting Space Marines first! :P I have 6 40k armies, 4 WFB armies and 3 LotR armies. Oh and 2 BFG fleets!

Classical: Historicals started with WG Romans!! :D Specifically the free one on the cover of WI, remember that? I have three boxes assebled but not painted yet. My interest in that dates from studying Latin in school. Thursdays were civilisation days, so we got a break from declensions and conjugations! The army and the struggles of Caesar, Pompey et al really fired my imagination. Stuck with Classics all the way to Masters level. My army theme is the Legio XX (Valeria Victrix) during a 'what if?' invasion of Hibernia.

Being Irish, I always find myself drawn to the Irish element in periods of conflict, the concept of the 'Irish Brigade' really captures my imagination! Therefore a lot of my projects have an Irish element as a theme

Napoleonic: I have a box of Victrix that I am planning on making into the 88th Connaught Rangers, 'The Devil's Own.' The French infantry box I also have will perhaps be turned into the 87e régiment (formerly Dillon's).

ACW: Nothing done here yet, but I want to build the Irish Brigade about the time of Gettysburg, in the Wheatfield.

Great War: Once again, I'd like to do an Irish regiment in the British army. I have visted the Somme and it's quite something, even after all these years.

I also have a copy of WH's Trafalgar but have yet to raise a fleet. I seem to buy nice rulebooks but never get round to much gaming.

Trafalgar is a ton of fun. I have a Royal Navy fleet, and my buddy has French; we never have a dull game!

Couple of books when I was young set me on the road into history; for ECW it was Children Of The New Forest and for ACW The Scarlet Raider (about Mosby's Rangers). My love of history just bloomed from there.

Actually my best friend, we still get together for a game every now and again, 10 years on. We recreated the Battle of Mogadishu the other week, with Imperial Guards racing to rescue a crashed Valyrie before being overrun by Orks. I called it Grey Valkyrie Down. ;)

My friend has made a squad of Guard veterans modelled on Sharpe and his men, you'd be amazed how he makes a model look like Sean Bean!!!

That's awesome! A great battle and better than the usual smash em up. I was an Ork player.

The best battle report ever was based on Ork's Drift.
