The History Channel....

Postby Augustus_Gaius » Mon Apr 02, 2012 11:24 am

Is embarrassing  It's all Aliens and pawn shops or to do with Hitlers sexual orientation... When did they stop showing actual documentaries? "ufo hunters" literally shows footage of 3 lights in the sky for an hour and interviews the people who seem to go "I dunno" :| what happened??

Most of their better stuff has been transferred to the Military Channel ( Still owned by History Channel) SKY 531

This is one of my favourite channels as there is plenty of WW2 and modern stuff on it. The Soviet Storm series is really well done with brilliant computer graphics. ;)

Indeed the military channel does have some better program, although they still focus on ww2 Germany A LOT

I am enjoying "The Roman invasion of Britain" on there though, don't know if it's a repeat, if it is I never saw it first time round. As I'm just starting this period it's been quite interesting although I don't have enough books yet for comparisons on info given. But you're right AG there is alot of stuff on the channel that's a bit "Meh"...

It is a repeat. I think it was originally done for the BBC . However it is very enjoyable and informative .Even better if you happen to be painting some Romans or Celts ;)

Said it before, I am really enjoying Soviet Storm on Military History at the moment.

Aye, what they said, all the good stuff is on Military History now. Though I find I've most of it several times over already. More new stuff would be nice.

Discovery and National Geographic are worse, it's all conspiracy theories and badly presented pseudo science. So much drivel about the Grail, the Titanic, UFOs. And if it's not that it's the latest disaster that's likely to do for us all, like an asteroid impact or Yellowstone blowing up.

There's probably about the same amount of History on the History Channel as there is...

- Science Fiction on SyFy (don't spell it SciFi anymore!)
- Cartoons on Cartoon Network
- Music on MTV
- (fill in the blanks!)

It's the perpetual problem with a business that's done well while in its own little niche. The Channel has done reasonably well. It's been around for quite a while. So eventually someone starts looking for ways to make more money. And typically more money is made by catering to the mainstream and not to the niche. So first one mainstream program creeps in. And then another. And before you know it, everything on the channel is devoted to mainstream and not niche.

So true. But not only in the commercial TV sector. Same with museums, book publishers, shops. Mainstream everywhere.

Indeed, the military history channel has some good documentaries on, perhaps this is because an "alien blaster" hasn't been found yet  if someone see's something like that though it'll be "alien invasion" or something and they'll be some "expert" talking about a potential alien invasion or something crazy  but yeah, i was just looking at the lineup and face palmed. Their are some gems on their however.
