Valejo Matt Varnish

Postby Centurio Marcus T » Wed Jan 11, 2012 12:59 pm

Gday all
I was looking at getting some Valejo matt varnish but i thought i would run it by you guys first :) At the momment i am using Army Painter matt spray varnish and i am just about out.I am happy with the results although i thought Testors Dullcote was better but more expensive and harder to get here in Aus.So i was thinking of going back to brushing varnish on and wondered what the Valejo stuff was like.Any help would be most appreciated 8-)

To be honest, I have always been dissappointed with all the acrylic Matt varnishes that I have tried. Most tend to leave a Satin finish. I would look at an Art or Model shop . The best results I have had are with Humbrol's Matt Coat ( model Shop) and Daley Rowney Soluable Matt varnish obtained from an Art and Craft shop. The latter is specially designed for going over Acrylic paints .

Both are solvent/oil based varnishes and both have given decent results over Army Painter dip.

Cheers Colonel for the quick response :D I have tried the Humbrol Matt Coat before and found it to be good although you really have to make sure its mixed well before applying.I havent tried the Daler Rowney varnish and will check that out as we have an Art/Craft shop close by and they may stock it. Thanks once again :D

All oil based varnishes need a good mixing. Get yourself some of those wooden stirrers you can find in Coffee shops and fast food places ( one begining with M comes to mind) and then you will be good to go. ;)

These are also great for building scenery as well!

Yes you are right about giving them a good stir and i think that is where a lot of people go wrong with brush on varnish.Hopefully they have some at the Art store and i will be able to give it a go.Thanks for the tips ;)

I just ordered some of the Vallejo brush on matt varnish.

I usually seal my models in clear future floor polish which leaves them GLOSSY, but durable. I then spray with either Krylon Matt Coat or sometimes with Testors. Thing is, Krylon seems to do a better job near the end of the can, and I'm finding Testors isn't getting near the level I like either. I've also found if you put too many coats of either, the model tends to return to a glossy finish.

SO, I'm now spraying one coat of Krylon, then doing a coat or 2 of Vallejo brush on. It's a big improvement, but I'd say it still does leave a tiny bit of that satin finish.

Considering trying that oil stuff as well. How do you clean the brushes? Paint thinner?

I use Revell Brush Cleaner avaiable from hobby shops. Thinners would probably work but may take a little longer to clean.

Another tip I can give is use a soft bristle brush ( natural or synthetic). Again these can be obtained cheaply.

Artists Acrylic Matt for me too but Winsor & Newton rather than Daler Rowney. Picked up one from DecoArt recently too but not given it a try yet.

I use Winsor & Newton since my old Varnish (also artist supply) vanished from the shops. It produces a real matt, not the semi gloss some so called matt varnishs have.

I had bad luck with the vallejo matt varnish as well. It left a milky looking coat on my model.

I have been using Model Masters Lusterless Flat. Really good stuff and my local hobby shop in Perth stocks it.
