Paint & Brushes

Postby Correus » Fri Jan 13, 2012 1:26 am

Yesterday I had the chance to go to the only model shop in out area that carries Vallejo paints.

To my horror the shop has changed hands!!! It is now called the 'Wizards Asylum Comics and Games'. Not a single historical ANYTHING was there, same for the shop it use to be. However, when it came to paints it was THE place to go to. They carried the whole line of GW as well as the complete Model Color and Game color offered by Vallejo.

The shop has a hefty following of games like Warhammer and games like D&D and sell all the toys needed for those. However, they have decided to cut back on the paints they will offer. They are only going to carry about 1/2 of the GW paints and only about 1/3 of the Vallejo Game color and no Model color!!!! :o :x

However, they do have something I haven't seen before - Vallejo washes. They had six colors to choose from but I only got 'Black Shade', 'Sepia Shade' and 'Fleshtone Shade'.

Have any of you used these? If so, how did they work for you?

I did find this review on lone though: http://lascannonslances.blogspot.com/2010/08/great-vallejo-wash-review.html.

after this stop I went to the only other Hobby shop in the area that is even close to a gamin shop (it's about like the first but they carry trains, models, and R/C vehicles as well as board games, but nothing historical. They do carry Wargames Illustrated sporadically though!!! :D

Anyway, I picked up a few pots of GW paints as well as a bunch of new brushes. Hopefully the wife will not see the amount I spent for all of the paints and brushes....

I have used the Vallejo Sepia wash, I alternate between that and Devlan mud, depending on availability. It is a good product.

I know what you mean though, it is amazing how much a few paints and brushes can add up to! :o

They are not the same as the Army Painter dips. All they are is repackaged washes nothing new. GWs Devlin Mud is far better if you can obtain it.

Yes Paint's and brushes...they do cost a fair bit don't they! When I pop into GW to get my paint they should provide me with a chair at the till....and say "are you sitting down sir...then I'll tell you how much you've spent"!

I tend to do most of my painting with Windsor and newton series 7 brushes they cost around £12 each but they live longer than 4 G.W. brushes so that isn't too bad!....perhaps I look after it more!!!!

I use Vallejo washes.....The black one is a dip formula so comes in a huge pot and is very good value for money....and I use a brown...Umber shade in place of Devlan mud....which is better value at least than the Citadel wash.

Shame about your shop though.....Mind you, given the number of figures you have to paint, he might well have to rethink the paint situation! ;)

Paints I tend to buy online or at my local Ian Allen Bookshop these days. Vallejos are tough to break in to because the droppers aren't easy to get used to (apart from the lack of a lid to dip into, you really do need to give them a good shake) because the bottles don't give you a great idea of the colour inside. However, once I got over those initial worries Vallejo have become my fave paint.

As regards brushes, for middle sizes I found the Army Painter ones to be good (around 0 to 2 ish) but for outside that I go to Hobbycraft and look in their sale bin first!

Must admit for brushes I've switched over to the Rosemary and co series 401. Works out at only a couple of quid per brush and they last longer than the gw ones.

Hi,
I use the Vallejo Sepia Dip and I like it. I brush it on, but I then highlight the brighter colours again -it's the approach I used on my TYW units and I'm going to use it again. Cost me £4.99 for a 200 Ml pot.

On brushes - There's a shop chain called The Works which sells packs of 4 brushes for £1.99. The manufacturer is Boldmere, they are Nylon round brushes in sizes 1, 3, 5, 6. While you'll want a smaller brush for fine detail, I used the smaller 2 to paint those figs with. The bigger ones would be fine for larger areas or horse bodies or applying the dip. The tips aren't bad.

They don't last all that long, but then I'm rubbish at looking after my brushes. If money is tight, try them. If you don't like them, you've still probably spent less than you would on a single brush elsewhere.

I use some of the Vallejo washed as they have interesting shades. My favorite are Umber Shade, Sepia Shade and, for white surfaces, Pale Shade. Compared to GWs washes they only have one problem: You can't dilute them with water properly. I almost always get grey shades at the dried surface when I used washes diluted with water. The only way to prohibit these traces is to use Vallejo Thinner or Glaze Medium as medium.
