An Old Friend

Postby Colonel White » Tue Mar 06, 2012 11:12 am

Just got my latest copy of the Airfix magazine last night and I couldn't help noticing all the new releases for Airfix. YOu would think with the title of the mag being Airfix that it would be heavily biased. I don't find that being the cases as some of the reviews in the past have been rather harsh on Airfix. However I do think this company have turned themselves around and is one of the Hornby sectors that is doing rather well.THe new releases should help further in this respect and first imprerssions are very good.

Having Airfix products within my fledgling 20mm WW2 British force is like seeing an old friend again hnece the title. The Cromwell tank and the QL/QT trucks are fantastic kits and IMO certainly on par with the top 20mm producers. I will stick my neck out here and say that the Cromwell tank is the best on the market in plastic and certainly as good as the MMS metals ( I have 4 Cromwell MKV11s). Only the Millicast ( resin) version I would say is probably slightly better but also is the cost.

I am going to get some of the Airfix Churchill Crocodile tanks as I think they are beter than the other offerings by other companies . A Club friend of mine who has recently lost his job is going to build them for me along with the Bridge layer . I need these to contibute to our forces "funnies pool" for the club DD campaign starting around Easter.

I must confess I have been really disappointed with the air fix releases this year. I have been collecting all the 1/32 rereleases, and was really disappointed that they haven't brought out any more this year. There are still quite a few that I would love that they havent reissued, the Japanese Infantry, Ghurkas, Italian Infantry and SAS were all sets I had as a child in 1/32.... Not to mention medieval knights, Cowboy and Indians and... footballers!
