Have i made a Schoolboy error?

Postby gorgarrak » Mon Dec 05, 2011 7:14 pm

I have just placed an order with Solas Wargaming (never heard of them before) there discounts seem too good to be true.
£40 for three boxes of Warlord Games Napoleonic Russians, so i save £14.00 but that's not all a further discount of 20% for Christmas, so another £8.00 off, and free 1st class postage all for £32.00. am i a fool, i paid with Paypal and have received a receipt and invoice, and they are on Facebook and Twitter. what are your opinions of this sort of deal?

I'll let you know how things turn out.

If it works out, fine?

I personally order only from Warlord. A discount isnt the only thing I look at.

A deal's a deal and Paypal should protect you if you don't get the goods - so long as you are within the claim time limit!

If Warlord supply these guys with their stuff and they're happy to make a tiny profit as a Crimbo promotion then job's a good 'un.

I Notice that they claim to have the Zulu Wars British in stock when not even Warlord have them themselves yet!
Boy, it sure would be nice if we had some grenades, don't you think?

I have a friend who has ordered from the same discount company 3 times and got burned each time. He says "the discounts are great". My reply is "If you don't get the stuff, then it is not a good discount".

Good news, he says he is stopping ordering from them.

You only get your money back if PayPal is able to get the money back from the account. If they take the money and run, then you will lose out.

A discount that is to good to be true? I don't know the trade discount they get from warlord but can hardly believe that they earn anything with the discount you've mentioned.

My local Battlefield shop gives 10 %, but only if you buy for 150 €. At 100 € 5 %. So my last big buy gave me a real small saving, even compared to the Warlord page prices with free p/p. And I got the items direct from shelves.

Hope you will get the items or money.

This is true, but if a Paypal account is empty then any refund claim is put on hold as funds are then automatically transferred from the Seller's bank account to which the Paypal account is registered. If they have closed the bank account as well or it is empty then you have lost your money!

Having said that, if this company has been around a while now then surely their Paypal and bank accounts must still be active? Just make sure you make a claim for your payment to be refunded within the 45 day limit.

Thanks for the advice, i have ordered and am hoping to receive the goods, as it was part of my hobby budget i can afford to do without the cash until a refund is given.(that is if the worst comes to the worst!) i guess i will have to go into this expecting to be burned and if I'm not it's a bonus.

Thanks for the quick responses

I wouldn't start to worry yet. Perhaps they are just running on really low margins. It is not unusual for shops to sell WG stuff at 20% off, and most of this places stuff is around the 25% off, so not totally impossible. Sometime Northstar have WG stuff as cheap as 50% off in their bargain basement for clearance. This shop seem to carry only a limited stock, and by the looks of it not vast amounts in stock so it may be possible by running a lean efficient operation on a very tight margin they are making a living, I notice their contact address is a flat, so It could be just a small from home affair. Google checkout, paypal and ebay have made this sort of trading quite possible.

I'm not sure it would be worth the hassle to set up a specialist shop of this sort to rip people off... after all most cons only have a few weeks before word gets about and they have stop trading and change names or whatever. And historical gaming is not a big bucks industry.

So take heart.

I would give them a good week before starting to get concerned. :D
