Great historical events you'd like to see made into films

Postby Titus Flavius » Tue Jul 27, 2010 3:47 am

Anyone read of any great historical events they'd like to see the film of? Perhaps some more celluloid-minded people could point us in the direction of the films we never heard of.

Personally I am looking forward to the film which is allegedly coming out later in the year called 'Ironclad' - about the siege of Rochester castle in the Second Baron's War.

But I'd also like to see a film made about the migration of the Teutones and the Cimbri. You could just imagine the epic shots of thousands of barbarians pouring into Italy...

Pardon me, Julius! Here wast thou bay'd, brave hart;
Here didst thou fall; and here thy hunters stand,
Sign'd in thy spoil, and crimson'd in thy lethe.

As a Welshman I guess I'd have to go for the rise and fall of the Welsh rebellion under Owain Glyndwr against Henry IV's English rule. It's wrapped up with court intrigue, double dealing, factions, defections, plenty of battles, ambushes and skirmishes. It actually came surprisingly close to forming a completely separate kingdom of Wales, forming diplomatic bonds with France, Brittany, Scotland and Ireland (although these last two were less enthusiatsic about open support). In the end of course, as is often the case, England managed to separate Glyndwr from his supporters one by one through force, threats and bribery and the rebellion fizzled out, Glyndwr disappearing into the hills never to be seen again.

Ooh, ooh, thought of a good one. I've always been interested in the LRDG and SAS in North Africa during WW2 and would certainly welcome some coverage of that, especially the raid on Barce and the airfield in Sept '42.

It could be called: "Balaclava - Not Just Terrorist Headgear."

Fantastic! We'll start casting tomorrow - any thought on a 'lord Raglan'?

Johnny Ball.

With Boris Johnson as Cardigan.

Narrated by Eddie Izzard as the voice of Alfred Lord Tennyson.

The Cubster has my vote for LRDG/SAS action.

All I ask of any "hastorical" film is that it not allow hacks like Randall Wallace, Mel gibson and Michael Bay to be involved. "The Patriot"," Braveheart", and "Pearl Harbor" are just stupifying...

the LRDG /sas is a great choice Obviously no British director or company would do it , butits tailer made for a cheap mini series as you need one truck and 5 blokes for most of it!

the film/period that AMAZES me hasnt been made is simply Hastings... pivotal battle(s)..Vikings,, kings ,queens,a ******* ...whats not to like??

Cheers js
