The live of the most popular roman in the world

Postby Gaius Julius Caesar » Mon Nov 03, 2008 3:54 pm

Hellow everybody.

You really know, who I'm talking about? Gaius Julius Caesar. I would play the battle of Alesia with a friend, but i don't know how to build an army. something i know: Caesars legions built a great ring aroud the citty of Alesia, but a secon Gaulic Army (Caesar sad 250.000 man) was coming closer. Caesar decided great. HE FOUGHT HIM SELFE. I don't know about any other general, who fought him selfe. This action was a very good decision, then the moral and the soldiers get stronger, cause they saw the General fought bey their side.

But i need some other informations. is there somebody, who can give me othe inormations?

Thank you for help.

(I sad it once. Please excuse my bad english)

Hi

I don't know what exactly it is you want to know, but here's a short overview:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Alesia

Other than that (nothing beats the original- some Latin required):

http://www.thelatinlibrary.com/caesar/

Btw, Warlord Games Romans are early imperial and not late republican/ Caesarian.

Buy them anyway, they are phantastic.Cool

Cheers

If it is Caesar that you are after, I recommend his book 'The Conquest of Gaul', it's published by Penguin for about £7. Alesia, Gergovia and many other battles are described by the man himself. If you really like Caesar, the Civil War is also available, mainly by Caesar. Appian is also published by Penguin - The civil Wars. I believe what you are asking for is maps of the battles and Republican Legionaries in Lorica Hamata and the bronze plumed headpiece, as is believed to be standardised after the Marian reforms.

Dudes, you will sculpt us some Republican legionaries won't you?

That Sounds Latin for the Conquest of Gaul, commentaires thereon. It's by Julius Caesar himself. He was one of the greatest Romans ever to live.

In my (partly Celtic) opinion, Gergovia is a more interesting battle :)This is a very nice and interesting web animation (unfortunately in french)http://www.gergovie.fr/htmfr/gergovie.htmlFor your information, the website is about the non official area of the battle. Like Alesia, there are always people who are looking for the right spot. Gergovia (nowadays) Gergogie is a high ground south of Clermont-Ferrand in the Massif Central, France.Olivierwho couldn't resist a range of late republican romans. WG Celts are fantastic.

Use Wikipedia or similar to look at a map of Alesia and the defenses.

The actual town was on a bluff of some sort and could be modelled with dense polystyrene and a hot wire.

The field defenses of the circumvalation where all hastily constructed field defenses of the sort in the Warlord terrain section the difference was they faced inwards towards Alesia and outwards too! and had pit traps in between stakes to chanel attackers.

Heres what Id do. Rather than Build a full scale town and paint 250,000 celts draw a map of the area and then choose 5-6 small areas of the larger map to model then run the seige as a mini campaign with a series of smaller encounters whose outcome affects the next battle. That way whose to say my Vercingetorix wouldnt be drinking mead from Caesars skull!

Games Workshop do this for 40K. So for example.

1) a section of the outer defenses to be attacked.

2) a section of the inner defenses (same as outer but reversed).

3) a narrow section of defenses with inner and outer sides to be simutaneously attacked so GJC can intervene.

4) a gatehouse for Alesia

5) An opening in the earthworks/Gatehouse in defenses.

6) A more traditional battlefield for the cavalry engagement.

Then set a points value for each battle and increase by 10% for a win and reduce for a loss. This would give a greater feeling of desperation.

History is great but give Vercingetorix a chance to take Caesar home in chains.

Figure wise Id use Warlord for all the Celts and 1st corp for the romans cos I love their Pompey and Caesar.

BUT if theres any hint from Paul on a Caesarian Range build the terrain pieces and Celts first and wait for the figures from warlord! (Thats a thinly veiled Hint to Paul) but imagine how it would look as a demo game, like the Lugg Vale game done by Grand Manner and Gripping Beast.

We currently have one of our sculptors doing two Emperors. I won't say who - don't to spoil the surprise ;)
