Roman gladiator cemetery in York

Postby Vadhagh » Tue Jun 08, 2010 4:55 pm

I just found this new and I wanted to share it with you. It's maybe the most important gladiator cemetery, it has 80 skeletons and it's been found in York. Although there is a discussion, they may be rests from criminals or even legionaries, but I like the comment of the lead archeologist: "It would seem highly unlikely that this individual was attacked by a tiger as he was walking home from the pub in York 2,000 years ago," LOL.

By the way, it would be really nice to have some gladiators from Warlord in the future!

Yes, I heard about this on the TV this morning. The chap said that the interesting thing was that there was no evidence of any arena anywhere in the area. They assume that there must have been for this cemetery to have been used, but they haven't found it yet or any evidence to support that such a place existed. But then, they have only just found this cemetery two years ago!

Are these skeletons going on display as I am planning a trip to York in the not to distant future which should help with my son's history homework.

This is one of the reasons history can be so fasinating as we are learning and discovering new things all the time . Has there been evidence of gladitorial displays held in this country?

“It would seem highly unlikely that this individual was attacked by a tiger as he was walking home from the pub,”

It may be unlikely, but it hasn't stopped me using it as an excuse for being home several hours late, nor will it in the future.

Hey, don't be so sure! Here is something that happened to me about 15 years ago.

I went to do an IT job at a builders supplies in Grimsby, which went on into early evening. At about 8pm we were ready to leave and exited the building . A shout went out to us to get back inside because the lions had escaped - the circus was in town and was sited on the large car park outside the building which was also next to the Police Station. I turned to go back in and saw the rear end of one of the lions disappearing over the wall into the storage yard. I phoned the wife to tell her I'd be home late and, naturally gave her my reason. Of course she believed me, not! A couple of hours later we were given the all clear and I got home at around 11:30. Needless to say I was really in the dog house and my missus wouldn't speak to me, until I got home the next evening and she apologised to me for doubting me and made a bit of a fuss. I was quite bewildered, until she told me that it had just been on the local news that the Lions had escaped from the circus. Result!!

So it might have happened, you know. The circus was banne from the town for a while after that incident and, as I said earlier, they haven't found any evidence of a 'Circus' as yet!

Ps: It is a true story, really! Best bit was I got paid overtime for it as well!

I've heard of taking pride in your work but ...

Roman gladiator cemetery in York

There's going to be a documentary about it on Channel 4 on Monday at 9 o'clock

Pardon me, Julius! Here wast thou bay'd, brave hart;
Here didst thou fall; and here thy hunters stand,
Sign'd in thy spoil, and crimson'd in thy lethe.

Just watched the documentary "Gladiators: Back from the Dead" on the Channel 4 webpage. Very entertaining and very informative, although I would have liked a few more different talking heads and not quite so many of the same bloody action shot in slow motion.
