Warlord’s in-house sculptor, Wojtek is like a miniature version of a real human being. As one of the little people he was keen to sculpt something of a similar scale to himself and these lovely little pixie models are the result.

More exotic ancients to add to our Hail Caesar range this week – this time the start of our Kushites…

The Kushites are an ancient group of people, living on the fringes of the known world in modern day Sudan. The Greek name Aithiopians, does not relate them to the modern country of Ethiopia. Herodotus describes the Kushites in Xerxes army as wearing the skins of animals such as Lions and Leopards and carrying primitive spears tipped with Agate. The also carried wooden clubs and rawhide shields.

The leader wears a garment reminiscent of earlier Libyan clothing which is shown on the Kushite throne bearer relief. He also wears a headdress of ostrich feathers. The standard holds a icon decorated with a lions mane, ostrich feathers and beads. The musician carries a drum which is synonymous with African tribal music.

The most striking feature of the Kushites is their vermilion and white body paint which they adorned themselves with before battle. Body paint still plays and important part in African tribal cultures. White and red can represent life, death, protection and aggression.

Described by Herodotus as the tallest and most beautiful people in the world, they must have been an intimidating opponent. Cambyeses tried to conquer the Kushites but his army nearly starved to death while travelling in the harsh barren environment between Kushiya and Egypt. Although never a part of the Persian empire, they did provide regular tribute and soldiers to the Persian army.

Following hot on the heels of our new Belgian FRC 47mm anti-tank gun is this tasty 76mm mortar. Although mostly used in mortar mode it could also be used as an infantry gun, firing over open sights…

The Canon de 76 FRC was a Belgian infantry support gun, Produced by the Fonderie Royale des Canons (FRC), the Canon de 76 FRC was usually a 76mm calibre weapon but there were also an optional 47mm barrel which could also be fitted. Captured by the German forces sweeping through Belgium and the Low Countries, the gun was redesignated as 7.6 cm IG 260(b) by the Wehrmacht. This would be an unusual addition to your German forces with Wehrmacht crew!

As you can see from the photos here, the crew use our Figure Head system and are therefore available as either Chasseurs Ardennais or regular Belgian Army troops.

The FRC 76mm was designed to be trailer wtowed and as luck would have it we have just the vehicle to pull your guns into the thick of the action…

And it would be rude of us not to remind you of our Belgian paint set – all the colours you’ll need to get your army onto the tabletop without the need to trawl through paint lists.

That’s not all for those of you collecting a Belgian army for WWII – more on the way soon…

With our Bolt Action rules on the way later this year, Warlord Supremo John Stallard has been enthused to paint up troops from the 53rd (Welsh) Infantry Division (being a Taff himself and his best mate’s dad was a gunner mentioned in despatches in that division too). The metal ‘Figure Heads’ We have available on our webstore means that he can also add a few supporting Jocks, from the 51st (Highland) Division, as he lived in Glasgow as a young lad (when Dinosaurs stalked the earth…)

The 53rd Division was called many names and had as its symbol a red Welsh crown and a dragon. They were called ‘Monty’s darlings’ by other jealous troops, “Monty’s butchers” by sullen German troops and “The Fairy Godmother Division” by some of the concentration camp inmates whom they rescued. They fought in Belgium, Holland the Battle of the Bulge, fighting all the way to Hamburg. They had little trouble with the Axis forces listening in on their Communications, they simply spoke Welsh – baffling to all but another Taff!

The 51st (Highland) Division had a colourful war too. They fought in the BEF early in the war and went on to land in Normandy in 1944. They initially did not perform as well as Montgomery had wished, but with retraining and new leadership they went on to make a real name for themselvs as only Scottish troops can. They had a habit of painting any captured bridge building or tank with their divisional markings and a large ‘HD’, earning themselves the sarcastic nickname of “The Highway Decorators”.

Between these two forces, John is getting a lot of stuff done now using the Army Painter style and using their awesome basing scenics.

No-one can resist adding vehicles to their Second World War force and John is no exception! He has started with an evil-looking flame thrower armed Carrier, the Wasp. He’s added a few back packs on the side as stowage and a captured MP40 sub-machine gun next to the gunner for those close quarter encounters. He has heavily weathered the carrier with a lot of mud and dust common to all tanks and vehicles in WWII.

For taming the Tigers, an Achilles 17 pdr self-propelled gun is just the ticket and an M24 Chaffee for reconnaissance duties. A Bedford OY 3-ton lorry is a must for British troops and work is well underway on his first Churchill to really shoot in his infantry assaults.

The Highland Tam o’shanters give an unusual twist to the regular Tommies. In Normandy their Colonel once ordered the Jocks to take off their helmets and wear their caps so the enemy “know they are being killed by Scotsmen!”. Heavy stuff indeed…

More from John in the future as he adds yet more to his army…

Just this just a portion of what is to come for this range. As you can see from the sculpts there is bags of character as befits the SAS raider sections. And how much armament does that armoured Jeep have!

Comprising historical (mostly!) wargamers from all across New England, and meeting regularly at the Hobby Bunker in Malden Massachusetts. The Boston Trained Bands wargaming group hosted several games of Black Powder at this year’s Huzzah! wargaming convention in Portland, Maine.

Using our Hail Caesar rules, the first game was The Battle of Maldon (991AD) which took place on the shores of the River Blackwater in Essex. There, historically, a heroic stand by the Anglo-Saxons against the Viking invasion ended in utter defeat for Brithnoth and his men.

The next game was set in 1813 at the Battle of Wartenburg and uses the Black Powder rules. Whereas Bernadotte hesitated to cross the Elbe River, Blucher and his Army of Silesia crossed at Elster in front of Wartenburg. The zone was defended by Bertrand’s IV corps (severely mauled at Dennewitz) and formed something of a natural fortress, being a flat alluvial plain intersected by dikes, ditches and marshes. How did things go on the day though?

Finally, there was The Battle of Dennewitz which was fight on 6 September 1813. The Battle of Dennewtiz was an epic clash between the French Army of Berlin (including many German States) and the Allied armies of Prussian, Russia and Sweden. Marshal Ney was ordered to march on Berlin and knock Prussia out of the war but the allies, working with a plan to retire before Napoleon himself and attack the other French armies, pushed reinforcements forward to meet the advance. Did the game at Huzzah! go differently? You can find out here. The game was hosted by Black Powder New England, http://groups.yahoo.com/group/BlackpowderNE/ a group clubs of individuals who meet across New England to play Black Powder.

If you are living on New England (and Massachusetts in particular) the Boston Trained Bands would be delighted to introduce you to Black Powder. For details or to find out more about the Boston Trained Bands you can contact Richard Claydon on rclaydon10@yahoo.com
