British & Commonwealth

British

The British Empire Strikes Back

Britain and her Commonwealth put huge numbers of men into uniform in WW2 to stem the aggression from Germany, Italy and Japan. Her small professional army was swallowed up defending a worldwide Empire and soon her forces were shattered and in full retreat, culminating in crushing reverses at Dunkirk and in Singapore.

However, Britain stoically declined to surrender and, with her loyal Empire at her side, fought back. Re-equipped and refreshed they took the war to the Axis powers.The ‘Tommies’, as they were known, learned new techniques on the field of battle and by war’s end were highly trained and well-equipped.

Warlord’s British infantry are tooled up for the job in hand. They are multi-part and can be assembled in a wide variety of ways, with a huge array of exotic looking weaponry. Fix bayonets!

Red Devils

Raiding Force!

The British learnt quickly from Germany’s mass use of paratroops, and by 1942 the Parachute regiment was mounting its first pin-prick raids against the occupying German forces across the channel. An example would be the famous Bruneval raid, where a young, but soon to become legendary, Major John Frost led a hand-picked group of paras to land and capture the Würzburg radar station.

The night assault was a splendid success. Stealing back vital components that enabled British scientists to see how far the Germans had caught up in the electronic war. The withdrawal by motor torpedo boats and covering troops on the beach was a text book model of how successful air and seaborne raids could be.

Warlord’s Red Devils are just the sort of chaps you’ll want to outsmart Jerry…

Airborne

Currahee! US Airborne Army Deal

St. Mere EglisThese special offers show off the might of the American parachute forces, their airborne divisions. The two most famous were of course the 82nd ‘All American’ and the 101st ‘Screaming Eagles’, both of whom were involved in the classic drops of Arnhem, Normandy and the Rhine Crossings…

Brave men, well led and superbly equipped, they were eager to close with their foe and give battle. In the main they fought very well indeed, though sometimes split up in the chaos of the drop, they excelled in fighting at close quarters and in the ambushing of small German units.

Warlord’s US Paratroopers are modelled in their tell-tale helmets, battledress and jump boots, many with a fighting knife at the ankle. Weapons include the ubiquitous Thompson SMG, M1 Carbines and Garand rifles – enough to lay down huge suppressive fire, an American speciality.

They are backed up by mortars, .30 cal Brownings and if the panzers get too close. the Airborne bazooka, though with luck the 57mm anti tank guns and jeeps would have been delivered together with the 75mm howitzers, and they should be able to dominate the perimeter.

Great troops, great models, dig in and hold until relieved!

Poland

Polish Deal

Polish Cavalry Starter Army

In contrast with its traditional role in armed conflicts of the past the cavalry was no longer seen as a unit capable of breaking through enemy lines. Instead, it was used as a mobile reserve of the Polish armies and was using mostly infantry tactics: the soldiers dismounted before the battle and fought as a standard (yet fast) infantry.

Although the cavalrymen retained their sabres, the lance was dropped and it was issued to cavalrymen as a weapon of choice only. Instead, the cavalry units were equipped with modern armament, including 75 mm guns, tankettes, 37mm AT guns, 40mm AA guns, anti-tank rifles.

Apart from countless battles and skirmishes in which the Polish cavalry units fought dismounted, there were 16 confirmed cavalry charges during the 1939 war. Contrary to common belief, most of them were successful.

The first and perhaps best known happened on September 1, 1939, during the Battle of Krojanty. During this action, elements of the Polish 18th Uhlan Regiment met a large group of German infantry resting in the woods near the village of Krojanty. Colonel Mastalerz decided to take the enemy by surprise and immediately ordered a cavalry charge, a tactic the Polish cavalry rarely used as their main weapon. The charge was successful and the German infantry unit was dispersed.

This deal includes the following

* 1 Lancer Command (3 Command figure

* 2 Lancer Cavalry Units ( 12 mounted Polish Cavalrymen broken down into 2 units of 6)

Jager Deal

Save Il Duce! Fallschirmjäger Deal

Mussolini had been deposed and an allied friendly government set up that was moving Italy’s resources to the Allies, an intolerable situation to Hitler’s plans for the Axis forces…

He ordered the rescue of the old fascist leader, picking Otto Skorzeny, the Austrian SS Commando to lead the daring rescue. Skorzeny chose a handpicked group of his own Waffen-SS, but the bulk of the party were regular Luftwaffe paratroopers, regularly equipped.

Using the DFS230 glider rather than parachutes, the German forces swooped on the isolated hotel at San Grasso, overwhelming the dazed and confused Italian guards who were reluctant to open fire on both previous allies and a band of men who looked like they meant business!

The Luftwaffe troops were armed with the latest weaponry MG42s, MP40 SMGs and the latest wonder weapon, the FG42 (an advanced design that coupled the advantages of the rifle with the firepower of an LMG, at least in theory…). Interestingly, Skorzeny’s SS, and indeed Skorzeny himself, carried MP28s, the early machine pistol with a magazine to the side, similar in look to the British Sten, but properly built!

The daring raid rescued Hitler’s ally and prolonged the war in Italy, Skorzeny claimed all the glory for himself the SS, though recent research seems to show that it was the Luftwaffe boys who did most of the hard work and reconnaissance.

Be that as it may, small, elite units of the Fallschirmjager could, and did, hit hard. Who would not like to refight scenes from the classic movie ˜The Eagle has landed™” on the table top and change the course of the war?

The ˜Save Il Duce!™ deal contains:

* 1 Fallschirmjager boxed set

* 1 Fallschirmjager MG42 team

* 1 Fallschirmjager 81mm Mortar team

* 1 x 11 man Fallschirmjager squad

* 1 x 6 man Fallschirmjager Recce team

£50 saves you £8 off buying them separately!

Italy

RoE Deal

Italian Paratrooper RoE Starter Army

In 1941 a 5,000 man Parachute division was raised and was designated the 185th Parachute Division Folgore, it was trained for the assault on Malta in Operation Hercules. During course of the war in Africa it was engaged in ground combat operations in North Africa from the July1942 until its destruction in 1943, after which a 185th Parachute battalion was raised from survivors.

The heroic behavior of the division Folgore during the Second battle of El Alamein in resisting the attacks of six British divisions (two armored and four infantry) inspired the respect and admiration of its enemy. Lacking effective anti-tank weapons, the Italian paratroopers managed to stop British tanks only with a few obsolete 47/32 guns and petrol bombs. On 11 November, 1942, when the battle was over, London Radio transmitted the famous official bulletin: “The remnants of the Folgore division put up a resistance beyond every limit of human possibility.”

The Folgore, having run out of water, withdrew from the El Alamein front at 2:00 a.m. on 3 November, 1942, carrying their anti-tank weapons. At 2:35 p.m. on 6 November what was left of the division was captured by the British. They had exhausted their ammunition and destroyed their weapons, but refused to raise their hands in surrender or show the white flag.

This Starter Army will allow you to field 1 Platoon Command and 2 Paratrooper Squads with additional support.

The deal contains the following:

* 4 man Platoon Command

* 2x 10 man Squads

* Company Support: 45mm Brixia mortar team

* Company Support: 2-man Sharpshooter team

* Company Support: HMG Team

* Divisional Support: Heavy Mortar Team
