Long-awaited and eagerly anticipated, the Montrose Irish are upon us!

There are few armies in this period that conjure up such romance as the Earl of Montrose. This handsome, daredevil Cavalier raised a small, disparate but highly effective army that smashed their Covenant lowland Scots foes time and time again in a series of short sharp actions.

The most dependable of all his forces were the three Irish regiments of James Macdonnell, Manus O’Cahan and Lieutenant General Macdonnell. These fine fighting regiments were the core of his rag-tag army. Time and again these rugged veterans saw off Scottish forces many times their number!

Led by either Montrose himself or his legendary number two – the giant Alasdair ‘the Devastator’ Mac Colla – they could either stand and volley their enemies while their powder held out or club their muskets, draw broadswords and pounce on their enemy, slaughtering them in a frenzied attack.
